Static vs dynamic QR codes.

Same look. Very different behavior.

The problem

Two QR codes that look identical can behave completely differently. People discover this the wrong way — after printing thousands of static QRs that turn out to need updates. Knowing the difference up front saves real money.

The fix

The difference is in what's encoded. A static QR has the destination URL baked directly into the dot pattern — once printed, the URL is immutable. A dynamic QR has a short redirect URL baked in (qrth.is/r/abc), and the actual destination is stored on a server where you can edit it anytime. Same image. Very different behavior.

What you get

  • Static QR — destination URL baked into the image. Free, simple, but immutable once generated.
  • Dynamic QR — redirect URL baked in; destination editable from a dashboard. Costs $0-$29 depending on volume.
  • Static QR scans go directly to the destination. Dynamic QR scans hit a redirect first (50-100ms overhead, usually unnoticeable).
  • Use static for one-and-done QRs (event poster, single-use promo). Use dynamic for anything that might change.
